Brazilian nuts exporters eyes to regain lost market in Europe, US

Engaged since the beginning of the year in efforts to improve the reputation of Brazilian nuts in the international market, the Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments (ApexBrasil) wants to earmark at least 50% of the sector’s exports to end consumers, such as the United States and the European Union. Currently, half of Brazilian exports are destined for Bolivia and Peru.
“In 1997, about 85% of the nuts Brazil exported went to the United States and Europe, but today their share corresponds to 30% of our exports, with 50% going to Bolivia and Peru,” says André Müller, ApexBrasil’s agribusiness manager. “It is evident that most of Brazil’s nuts going to Bolivia are not for Bolivian consumption, but for export.”
Brazil is the world’s fourth largest exporter of shelled nuts (minimally processed), trailing only Germany, Peru, and Bolivia. When it comes to the aw product, with shell, Brazil leads in exports: 8.5 thousand tons in 2022, followed by Bolivia’s 1.9 thousand tons.
The chart below shows which ports in Brazil led the charge in terms of nuts exports in 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

According to Müller, in addition to the sanitary issue, Brazil has lost space in the international market due to the decline in national production. The volume, which was 50 thousand tonnes in the 1970s, dropped to 38 thousand tons in 2022.
In the opinion of the international markets advisor for the Vale do Amanhecer Farmers Cooperative (Coopavam), Johann Wolfgang Schneider, Bolivia strived to improve the reputation of its nuts. “They have a cheaper cost structure because they have more volume, are more organized, and have working capital to finance the process,” he says. The cooperative has accessed important markets since 2019 and exported 80 tons last year.
