Brazilian papaya producers rejoice as space in Chilean market increase

Considered one of the best in the world due to its quality and good reputation, the papaya produced in Brazil has won over Chileans. The neighboring country announced, in mid-March, the opening of the market for the export of Brazilian fruit.
Exporters and producers based in Espírito Santo, the state that produces and exports papaya the most in the country, have high hopes for this new commercial venture. With several years of experience growing and selling the fruit, Rodrigo Martins points out some advantages of having Chile as a trading partner.
“First of all, having access to a news market helps us to increase our revenue. Another important advantage is the possibility of exploring by land, which allows us to save in logistics and guarantees that the product will reach consumers at a more competitive price,” says him.
In addition, according to Rodrigo, “the fact that Chile is one of the largest fruit exporters in South America also brings us possibilities for exchanging experiences with large local producers and exporters.”
Anízio Moreno also works with the fruit and points out that the quality of the Brazilian papaya and the expertise of the producers here were fundamental for opening the new market.
“This development means that Brazilian papaya is well accepted in all countries that import it. There are several countries in Central America, not to mention Mexico, that are also producers, but they cannot compete in terms of quality and traceability from the fields to the consumer’s table in the way Brazil does through specialized companies.”
Brazil exports to Europe, the United States, and other countries in South America, such as Uruguay and Argentina.
Long-term negotiation
The announcement that the Chilean market is now open to Brazilian papaya came after months of negotiations. In 2022, producers based in Linhares (Espirito Santo) received a visit from Chilean auditors, together with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa) and the Brazilian Association of Papaya Producers and Exporters (Brapex) and the productive sector, to verify phytosanitary conditions in papaya-producing regions.
Months later, representatives of the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas) were in Chile with Brazilian producers to learn about the particularities of papaya consumption there.
“We have held conversations for months. We welcomed them here and visited them there, and now we have a well-rounded, signed agreement. The next step would be for the Ministry of Agriculture to create a program in which interested companies may enroll to export, which should happen in no time,” commented the executive director of Brapex, José Roberto Macedo Fontes.
