Brazilian ports move more than 113 mt of cargo in May 2023

Cargo movement through Brazilian ports exceeded the 113.2 million mark in May 2023, according to the country’s National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq)’s statistical service.
The 10.43% growth from May 2022 was driven by rising Iron Ore and Soybean operations, with 34.14 million and 19,18 million tonnes handled, respectively, and 15.34% and 43.02% in percentage terms.
Crude oil was Brazil’s third most handled commodity in Brazilian ports, with 17.54 million tonnes recorded, an 11.69% increase from last year.
Private terminals
Private Use Terminals (TUPs) in Brazil were responsible for the movement of 72.74 million tonnes of goods in May 2023. The number represents an increase of 10.11% compared to the same period last year.
Some of the highlights among private ports were the Ponta da Madeira terminal, with more than 13 million tonnes handled, up 13.7% compared to May 2022.
Tpet/Toil Oil Terminal, located in Porto do Açu in Rio de Janeiro, also appeared among the top five TUPs with the highest cargo throughput in the month, which accounted for 4.95 million tonnes, up 103.96%.
Public ports
This category of ports moved 40.5 million tonnes in cargo during May, representing an increase of 11% compared to the same period last year.
As usual, the Port of Santos saw the most cargo, with 11.88 million tonnes, representing an increase of 5.54% compared to May 2022. This public port was responsible for 29.4% of all cargo handled in the country’s public ports.

The ports of Itaguaí (RJ) and Paranaguá (PR) rounded up the podium of organized ports with 5.7 million tonnes and 5.5 million tonnes handled, respectively. In percentage terms, the respective increase was 18.7% and 19% compared to the previous year’s same period.
Year-to-date
Brazil’s port sector handled more than 495.8 million tonnes between January and May. This represents an increase of 4.4% compared to the same period in 2022.
Iron Ore was the most handled cargo during this period, reaching 137.6 million tonnes, with a cumulative growth of 5.11% compared to the same period the previous year.
Other notable cargo operations from January to May 2023 include Corn with 10.2 million tonnes (a growth rate of 65.52%), Soy with 69.3 million tonnes (an increase of 14.62%), and Petroleum (Crude Oil) with 82.7 million tonnes (a positive variation of 10.19%).
