Brazilian ports record over 115M tonnes of cargo in July

Brazil’s waterway sector moved more than 115.7 million tonnes in July this year, according to the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ).
The 4.8% growth compared to July 2022 was driven by increased movement of Iron Ore and Crude Oil, with 34.87 million and 19.94 million tonnes moved, respectively. In terms of percentages, the respective increases were 2.2% and 22.6%.
Soybeans took third place in the tonnage podium for the month, with 9.87 million tonnes moved, representing an increase of 26.36% compared to the same period last year.
Private Terminals
Private Use Terminals (TUPs) recorded 75.83 million tonnes moved in July 2023. This number represents a 6.9% increase compared to the same period the previous year.
The positive highlight of private ports was the Tpet/Toil Oil Terminal, located in the Port of Açu in Rio de Janeiro, with more than 5.97 million tonnes, showing a positive variation of 42.5% compared to July 2022.
The Angra dos Reis Terminal (Tebig), on the other hand, saw the highest percentage highlight among the top five TUPs with the largest cargo throughput in the month, with a 71% growth compared to the same period the previous year. The port moved 5.73 million tonnes during the period.
Public Ports
Organized ports handled approximately 40 million tonnes during the month of July, representing a little over a 1% increase compared to the same period last year.
The port with the highest throughput in the month was Santos, with 12.2 million tonnes, representing a 3.85% increase compared to July 2022. The Organized Port was responsible for 30.5% of all public port movement during the period.
The ports of Itaguaí (RJ) and Itaqui (MA) stood out among organized ports, with 5.27 million tonnes and 3.5 million tonnes, respectively. In terms of percentages, the respective increases were 7.23% and 12.53% compared to the same period the previous year.
Year-to-date
Between January and July, the port sector had a YTD throughput of approximately 732.3 million tonnes. This represents an increase of 5.4% compared to the same period in 2022.
The most moved cargo so far is Iron Ore, with 207.6 million tonnes from January to July, representing a cumulative growth of 5.95% compared to the same period the previous year.
Among Brazil’s main cargoes either exported or imported from January to July 2023 are: Corn with 22.25 million tons (growth of 22.29%); Soybeans with 97.9 million tons (an increase of 22.29%), and Crude Oil with 123.7 million tons (positive variation of 9.72%).
Other highlights this year were the movements at the Tubarão Terminal (+13.32%) and the Tpet/Toil Oil Terminal – Açu (+45.31%), solid bulk cargo profiles (+8.39%), and liquid bulk (+4.48%).
