Brazilian ports record over 97 mt throughput in April 2023

The Brazilian port sector recorded a cargo throughput of 97.5 million tonnes in April of this year, according to data from the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ).
There was a slight growth of 0.1% compared to the same period in 2022, driven by increased handling of Iron Ores and soybeans, with 27.4 million and 18 million tonnes, respectively. This represents a respective increase of 3.28% and 20.92%.
Petroleum (crude oil) closed the list of goods that moved more than 10 million tonnes in the month, with 15.46 million tonnes handled, marking a 0.6% increase compared to last year.
Private Terminals
Private Use Terminals (TUPs) recorded a total of 63.83 million tonnes in April 2023, representing a 2.21% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
For the second consecutive month, the Tubarão Terminal stood out among private ports, handling 6 million tonnes and showing a positive variation of 12.9% compared to April 2022. Another noteworthy terminal was the Tpet/Toil Oil Terminal, located in Porto do Açu, Rio de Janeiro, which handled a total of 3.52 million tonnes, reflecting a growth of 38.17%.
Public ports
In terms of public ports, the organized ports handled just over 33.7 million tonnes in April, indicating a decrease of 3.7% compared to the same period last year. The Port of Santos stood out with a 10.9 million tonnes throughput, surpassing the Terminal of Ponta da Madeira and becoming the port with the highest movement in the month after a positive variation of 2.44%. It is important to note that the Organized Port accounted for 32% of all public port movements throughout the month.
YTD figures
From January to April, the port sectors saw a total movement of 377.9 million tonnes, representing a 1.47% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Exports saw a growth of 4.16% compared to the previous year.
The highlights of the year so far include the cargo movement operations at the Tubarão Terminal (+22.18%) and the Tpet/Toil Oil Terminal – Açu (+53.99%), with solid bulk cargo operations increasing by 3.11% and liquid bulk by 2.82%. Additionally, there was a significant increase in corn (+93.70%) and petroleum-crude oil (+8.39%).
