Brazil’s Aurora successfully ships 1st pork container to Canada

Aurora Coop is the first company in Brazil to export pork to Canada, a new market for Brazil’s meatpacking industry.
Aurora Coop met all technical specifications (sanitary and animal welfare) listed in the agreement between Brazil and Canada signed in March of this year, with the authorization of Brazilian plants first announced in mid-June, igniting the green light for pork exports to the country in North America.
The first container, carrying 25.3 tonnes of pork cuts, left on August 23 from the port of Navegantes (Santa Catarina) aboard the ship Lyon II, which will dock at the Port of Montreal.
The commercial director of foreign markets, Dilvo Casagranda, emphasizes that this is the first shipment of specific cuts demanded by the Canadian importer to allow consumers to experience the quality of Brazilian products and open doors to this new market.
The first cargo load shipped was negotiated in advance by members of Aurora’s commercial team with customers who had already imported chicken meat into that country.
Producer of around 2 million tonnes of pork per year, Canada is the third largest exporter in the world, ahead of Brazil. However, even with meaningful participation in the international pork market, the country imports around 200 thousand tonnes annually, demonstrating a vital space to be taken up by Brazilian exporters.
The approach for expanding its presence is to address the needs of distinct niches. “We will face this challenge in order for Aurora to grow and establish itself as a key exporter to Canada,” Casagranda says. Regarding quality and specificities, Canada is one of the most demanding markets. Therefore, Aurora Coop will become a key supplier to the Canadian market, with robust exports to the United States, Japan, and other countries.
President Neivor Canton notes that the company is repeating its November 2014 record of being the first Brazilian company to sell pork to the United States. “Export, albeit modest in size, represents a key milestone in the international acknowledgment of the quality of our industrial swine farming,” says the leader.
