Brazil’s Bahia see exponential surge in fruit exports

Between January and November 2023, the fruit industry in Bahia experienced an exponential surge in exports, with shipments reaching approximately 170,000 tonnes and generating a staggering revenue of R$1.05 billion. This remarkable growth signifies a remarkable 37% increase compared to the previous year.
At the forefront of this success story were mango and grape harvests, complemented by robust shipments of pineapple, apricot, fig, guava, papaya, watermelon, lemon, and lime, as confirmed by data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Agrostat/Mapa).
Guilherme Coelho, president of the Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivative Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas), lauds the efforts to explore new markets for Brazilian fruits, which resulted in various new export destinations and a substantial uptick in trade. Coelho credits the sector’s growth to favorable pricing dynamics throughout 2023 that benefited producers in the Northeast region.

However, amid this prosperity, significant export challenges linger on. Anderson Ferreira, a mango producer in the Maniçoba region, underlines the logistical hurdles encountered at the Salvador Container Terminal (Tecon), despite the region’s fertile soil offering ample planting opportunities. Ferreira stresses the importance of comprehensive soil analysis to optimize nutrient utilization.
Similarly, Luiz Soares, a grape producer in the Juazeiro region, mentioned that the market saw favorable conditions for table grape sales, both domestically and abroad. He stressed the need for continued cooperation and logistical improvements to effectively navigate the global demand.
With Bahia’s fruit exports poised for further growth, they not only bolster the regional economy but also reinforce Brazil’s position as a leading global supplier of fresh, high-quality fruits.
