Brazilian coffee exports to 122 countries generated, in 2022, a record foreign exchange revenue of US$ 9.233 billion, representing a 46.9% increase over the previous year’s figure of US$ 6.285 billion. In terms of volume, the country shipped 39.350 million 60 kg bags, a 3.1% decrease from 2021. The data come from the Council of Coffee Exporters of Brazil (Cecafé) statistical report.
In the first six months of the MY 2022/23, Brazil shipped 19.341 million coffee bags and generated US$ 4.576 billion for the country, a decline of 1.7% in volume but an increase of 31.5% in revenue. These results were achieved with the 3.195 million bags sent abroad in December, which generated US$ 707 million – down 17.9% in volume and 11.8% in revenue compared to the same month of the previous year.
According to the president of Cecafé, Márcio Ferreira, the record coffee revenue in 2022 was caused by higher prices and a favorable exchange rate. As for the drop in volume, he recalls that 2022 was still a year impacted by logistical bottlenecks in world maritime trade, in addition to geopolitical conflicts and a greater interest in Robusta and Conilon varieties.
MAIN DESTINATIONS
Among the top 10 destinations for coffee in Brazil last year, only Japan did not show growth.
The United States leads the list of major destinations for Brazilian coffee in 2022, with imports of 7.985 million bags, a volume 2.1% higher than that purchased in 2021 and equivalent to 20.3% of the total. In second comes Germany, with the acquisition of 6.844 million bags (+4.2% and share of 17.4%); Italy, with 3.355 million (+13.7% / 8.5% of the total); Belgium, with 2.921 million bags (+2.7% / 7.4% of the total); and Japan, with imports of 2.873 million bags (-25.5% / 4.8% of the total).
With the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, exports to the region recorded a decline last year. Only Russia had a drop of 46.6%, with its acquisitions going from 1.217 million, in the year before last, to 650,174 bags in 2022. Thus, the Russians left the sixth place in the ranking and dropped to 15th position.
The positive performance in coffee shipments to Colombia, Holland (Netherlands), and South Korea, on the other hand, deserves to be highlighted. Colombians took sixth place in the ranking, acquiring 1.721 million bags, a volume that was 48.1% higher than in 2021. The Dutch increased their imports by 75.6%, reaching 916,412 bags and propelling the country to ninth place. The Koreans are ranked tenth, having purchased 858,228 bags and increased their imports by 25.2%.
Coffee shipments from Brazil performed well in China as well. Last year, the Asian country purchased 414,842 bags of the product, a 21.3% increase over the 341,898 bags imported the previous year. With this performance, the Chinese rose to 20th place in the product’s main destinations ranking.
PORTS
The Santos maritime complex was Brazil’s leading coffee gateway in 2022, sending 31.542 million bags, equivalent to 80.2% of the total. Completing the list of the top three are the ports of Rio de Janeiro, which account for 15.3% of shipments, with shipments of 6.038 million bags last year, and Paranaguá (PR), with exports of 354,519 bags (0.9%).
