Brazil is the world’s leading exporter of frozen concentrated orange juice (FCOJ). In the 2022/23 harvest, exports increased by 16.06% in terms of revenue to US$2.038 billion. This was just below the figures obtained in the 2014/15 and 2017/18 seasons. In terms of quantity, exports decreased by 0.77% to 1.028 million tons. This was still close to the levels achieved in recent decades.
Two traditional markets stand out in the consumption of Brazilian orange juice: the European Union and the United States. The EU saw a decrease in its imports of Brazilian FCOJ, from 654.2 million tons to 548.1 million tons (-16.2%). However, the value of these imports fell by a smaller amount, from US$1.2 billion to US$1.1 billion (-8.3%).
The United States, on the other hand, saw its imports of Brazilian FCOJ increase significantly. Imports rose from 211.2 thousand tons to 328,089 tons (+55.31%), while the value of these imports more than doubled, from US$384.8 million to US$691.5 million (+98.5%). This increase was due to the devastation caused by hurricanes in orange groves in the United States.
Other major markets for Brazilian FCOJ include Japan and China. Japan saw its imports of Brazilian FCOJ decrease from 41.1 thousand tons to 32.9 thousand tons (-19.1%), while the value of these imports fell by 2.1%, from US$69.6 million to US$68.1 million. China’s imports of Brazilian FCOJ remained stable at 81.3 thousand tons, but the value of these imports more than doubled, from US$95 million to US$242 million. This was due to the high prices of FCOJ in recent years.
The remaining markets for Brazilian FCOJ totaled 37.9 thousand tons and US$65.5 million in sales. There is still room for growth in these markets, as well as in new markets such as South Korea, which has already imported 30,000 tons of Brazilian FCOJ.
