Brazil’s aquaculture sector saw substantial growth in Q3, with a 174% increase in export value and a 158% rise in volume compared to the same period in 2023. The sector’s exports reached $18.5 million and 4,000 tonnes between July and September, reflecting the upward trend for Brazilian aquaculture. These insights come from the latest edition of the Aquaculture Foreign Trade Report, compiled quarterly by Embrapa Fisheries and Aquaculture in partnership with the Brazilian Aquaculture Association (PeixeBR).
Tilapia remains Brazil’s top fish farming export product, both in production volume and export value, accounting for over $18 million in sales—a 173% jump from Q3 last year. The next most-exported fish species, curimatá, accounted for $146,000, while exports of the native tambaqui fish brought in $108,000.
As in past reports, the United States continued as the primary destination for Brazilian aquaculture exports, taking in 92% (or $17 million) of Brazil’s Q3 exports in the sector. Trailing significantly behind were Canada, Japan, and China, each receiving 2% of the exports. Tilapia was the most exported species to all these countries and was the only species exported to Canada and Japan during the quarter.
Fresh or chilled tilapia fillets led Brazilian aquaculture exports, bringing in $12 million from July to September, marking a 174% increase over the previous year. Exports of fresh tilapia fillets, valued at $7.89 per kilogram in Q3 2024—up from $6.99 in the same period last year—have shown steady growth, particularly in the U.S. market, where demand has surged.
The chart below, which features DataLiner data, shows Brazil’s fish meat exports in containers (measured in TEUs) between January 2021 and August 2024.

Brazilian states Paraná and São Paulo accounted for 95% of aquaculture exports in Q3 2024. Paraná led with $10.7 million (59% of the total), followed by São Paulo with $6.5 million (36%). In both states, fresh or chilled tilapia fillets were the top export.
This steady growth, particularly in high-value products like fresh tilapia fillets, highlights the increasing economic impact of Brazil’s aquaculture sector in global markets.
