Data released by the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados) shows that in April there was a 40% drop in volume and a 60.8% drop in revenue for footwear exports compared to year-ago levels. In April 2020, 4.84 million pairs were shipped totaling US$30.3 million.
In the first four months of this year, 36.87 million pairs of shoes were exported equivalent to US$271.2 million. This marked a decrease of 14.4% in volume and 21% in revenue when compared to the corresponding period of 2019. The executive president of Abicalçados, Haroldo Ferreira, said that the Covid-19 crisis was to blame for the poor performance, especially since the United States is the main customer of Brazilian footwear abroad. From January to April, Americans imported 3.1 million pairs, generating US$51.32 million, representing a decrease of 35.4% in volume and 26.7% in revenue in relation to the same period last year.
