Brazil’s largest port embraces drone use to improve operations safety

The control and support services at the terminals of the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, previously carried out by helicopters, have been replaced by drones [remotely controlled aerial vehicles with cameras attached].

Using drones reduces operation time, increases productivity, and boosts accuracy while increasing safety standards for workers and allowing the closer observation of equipment and products that undergo regular monitoring.

According to Arthur da Anunciação Neto, director of a maritime agency responsible for port information and restrictions, drones effectively replace the service previously provided by helicopters.

“Before, we would hire a helicopter, which was very expensive and time-consuming. With the drone service, taking off and getting excellent photos is much easier and faster,” explained the director. “These photos provide an immersive experience of the ports of Brazil. For example, we are mapping the grain and fertilizer terminals of the Port of Santos.”

Rules

To fly over the port region, however, it is necessary to have authorization from the Santos Port Authority, which is responsible for its administration. According to the institution, flight permits are granted upon airspace administration agencies and accident insurance approval. The entity adds that flying over fuel terminals is prohibited.

According to Gabriel Ribeiro, founder of a drone company, it is essential to emphasize the importance of proper documentation.

“All the work we do follows a protocol that involves SPA authorization and mandatory documentation for drone operators, which includes registration with the National Civil Aviation Agency, liability insurance for the explorer or air transporter (Reta), a mandatory protection for any type of aircraft, regardless of purpose, and risk analysis,” he concluded.
