The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) authorized, in the first two months of 2023 alone, over 90 companies to export corn to China. Now the list counts 446 Brazilian companies ready to ship the commodity to the other side of the globe.
“We expect a record in Brazilian corn exports this year; we are even counting on the possibility of surpassing the United States in terms of corn exports,” comments the Secretary of Agricultural Defense, Carlos Goulart.
Corn exports from Brazil have continued to rise in 2023 and gained momentum with sales to China. According to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), in January of this year, Brazilian corn exports rose 167% compared to the same month last year, with the Asian country absorbing 15% of the Brazilian supply. Until last year, Brazil’s main corn buyers were Iran, Japan, Spain, and Egypt.

According to an agreement signed in 2022, Mapa is the one that registers Brazilian companies that meet the requirements determined by China for the export of corn. After their registration in Brazil, the Ministry sends the information to the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). After that, as soon as the Chinese authorities give the green light, companies can begin shipping the grain to that country.
