Brazil’s new container terminal in Amapa should register 1st shipment in August

The first container terminal in Amapa is expected to receive its first cargoes this August in the city of Santana. The new structure will allow the development of new economic routes, strengthening navigation between Amapá and the Guiana Plateau, for example.
Authorized by the Federal Revenue Service of Brazil, the terminal operates in an area leased from Companhia Docas de Santana, in the municipality that is part of the Metropolitan Region of Macapá.
For Otávio Júnior, director of operations at Teconap, the company that manages the container terminal, Amapa, is now entering a new economic cycle.
“This new terminal will open up a new business moment, favoring market development for the state. We have a storage area for containers with an area of 18 square meters, ready to operate, after a long period of customs structuring,” he commented.
The president of Companhia Docas de Santana, Edval Tork, mentions that one of the key factors of the novelty is the number of containers that can be stored in the recently built area.
“Before, our container operations were exclusively for the domestic market, mainly for in-state companies, with an average of 400 containers/year. Now, we expect to handle three thousand containers per year. The first shipment will arrive in August and, during the rest of the year, I believe in an initial throughput of 2,000 to 3,000 containers/year,” he described.
The new terminal structure should streamline the flow of cargo, increase export and import capacity, and bring new technologies to the state of Amapa.
“We expect to service both goods for domestic consumption and export, such as wood shipments and agricultural products. Today we are working only with grains coming from the country’s center-west region through the port of Mirituba, Pará,” Tork added.
One of the terminal’s most significant advantages is its geographic location near other markets such as China, the United States, Italy, and England. With the container terminal fully operational, Amapá will have one of the fastest transit times for commodities, requiring only five days to reach the terminal at Colón, where the Panama Canal is.
This caught the attention of investors. Felipe Lemoan, general director of the main seaport in French Guiana, visited the container yard and closed a deal to use of the terminal. For him, the great advantage is the possibility of exploring a commercial maritime route linking Amapa through the port of Santana, to French Guiana and Suriname, through the port of Georgetown in Guyana.
