Ports in Brazil’s Paraná state reached a historic milestone in June, achieving a total cargo throughput of 6,582,670 tonnes—a 3% increase compared to the previous record of 6,376,229 tonnes set in December last year—making it the best month in their history.

“This achievement is due to a highly dedicated team. Considering that Paraná is the rainiest place in Brazil, often forcing us to suspend bulk operations, achieving so many records under these conditions is challenging,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

In exports, bulk sugar and soybeans stood out among commodities, with 669,380 tonnes and 1,676,369 tonnes moved, respectively. Bulk sugar saw a 15% increase compared to June 2023 (582,094 tons), while soybeans rose by 6% from the same month last year (1,578,472 tonnes).

The chart below builds on DataLiner data to show the evolution of container exports from the Port of Parangua between January 2022 and May 2024.

For imports, fertilizers and containers recorded the highest volumes, totaling 4,777,376 tonnes and 63,600 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The Ports of Paraná remain Brazil’s primary gateway for fertilizers, with a 20% increase over June 2023 (727,282 tons). Container volumes showed significant growth, rising by 45% compared to June of the previous year (394,557 tonnes).

These results stem from strategic planning and engineering efforts, which have earned the ports of Paraná four consecutive awards for best port management from the federal government.

“June was a month of significant activity in both exports and imports, and the outlook for the second half of the year is even more promising,” noted Gabriel Vieira, Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná.

Moegão hopper

The Moegão project is Portos do Paraná’s most significant investment to improve railway operations. “This is the largest port intervention currently underway in Brazil, with a budget of R$592 million, funded by us. The new railway hopper, installed over nearly 600,000 m², will centralize unloading operations for the trains arriving at the Port of Paranaguá,” explained the CEO.
