Brazil’s Pork Exports Surge 9.2% in September, Gaining New Markets

Brazil’s pork exports (including both fresh and processed products) reached 112.2 thousand tonnes in September, reports the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). This figure represents a 9.2% increase compared to the same period in 2022, when exports were at 102.7 thousand tonnes.

In terms of revenue, the sector’s exports reached $244.7 million in September, a marginal 0.2% increase from September 2022, $244.3 million.

For the year-to-date (January to September), pork exports totaled 920.1 thousand tonnes, marking an 11.4% increase compared to the same period in 2022, when exports stood at 825.6 thousand tonnes. The revenue growth is even more substantial, at 16.7%, with $2.160 billion in 2023 compared to $1.851 billion in the first nine months of 2022.

Among the primary export destinations from January to September, China maintained its lead with 311.1 thousand tonnes (a 2.1% decrease in the same period in 2022). Following closely are Hong Kong with 91.2 thousand tonnes (a 22.6% increase), the Philippines with 90.8 thousand tonnes (a 33.3% increase), Chile with 63.1 thousand tonnes (a 58.7% increase), and Singapore with 49.4 thousand tonnes (a 10.9% increase).

“We see a significant increase in imports from markets beyond China and Hong Kong, especially from countries in Asia and the Americas. One of the main highlights is Mexico, which is now among the top 10 largest importers of Brazilian pork, with over 5,000 tonnes imported in September,” says Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA.

Santa Catarina remains the leading pork exporter in Brazil, with 495.5 thousand tonnes shipped between January and September, a 10.9% increase compared to the same period in 2022. It is followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with 213.7 thousand tonnes (an 11.9% increase), Paraná with 172 thousand tonnes (a 6.45% increase), Mato Grosso with 21.1 thousand tonnes (a 36% increase), and Mato Grosso do Sul with 19.6 thousand tonnes (a 31.4% increase).

“In addition to Mexico, pork sales have gained new destinations that indicate substantial volumes to be shipped this year. Canada, for example, has been increasing its purchases every month, and the Dominican Republic recorded its first pork import from Brazil this month,” notes Luís Rua, ABPA’s market director.
