Brazil’s port sector Jan-Feb cargo throughput over 174 mt

The Brazilian port sector recorded a throughput of 174.46 million tonnes of cargo from January to February 2023. The data are from the most recent update of the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ)’s statistics report.

The 3.07% drop compared to the same period in 2022 was driven by the decrease in the transport of iron ore (-4.2%), soybeans (-19.165), and fertilizers (-24.97%).

Corn was one of the highlights in the period, with a movement of 8.1 million tonnes across Brazilian ports, representing a 148.43% increase over the same period last year. Iron, steel, and crude oil also had good handling rates, with 4.5 million tonnes (+14.10%) and 32.3 million tonnes (up 3.85%), respectively.

Inland navigation corresponded to 11.4 million tonnes from January to February, representing a positive variation of 6.91%. On the other hand, long haul navigation (117.9 million tonnes), cabotage (44.9 million tonnes), and maritime support (337 thousand tonnes) withdrew during this period, registering, respectively, decreases of 3.54%, 3.76%, and 35.79%.

Public ports

Public ports reached a throughput of 58.5 million tonnes, a decrease of 1.84% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Port of Itaguaí, in Rio de Janeiro, was responsible for 3.9% of the total national throughput, with 6.8 million tonnes handled, representing a growth of 33.58%.

The Port of Itaqui, in Maranhao state, increased by 12.13% to 4.1 million tonnes handled. The port of Suape completed the podium with a 4 million tonnes cargo throughput, representing an increase of 9.9% from January to February this year.

Private terminals

Private Use Terminals (TUPs) handled 116 million tonnes of cargo, representing a decrease of 3.68% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Among the installations with the highest growth, the main highlight is the Tpet/Toil Oil Terminal in Porto do Açu. The private terminal had an increase of 71.75%, with 6.4 million tonnes handled and 3.7% in the category.

Terminal Porto Sudeste do Brasil S/A, also in Rio de Janeiro, was another private facility that recorded substantial growth (+27.60%) – 3.4 million tonnes were handled, accounting for 1.9% of the total movement seen in TUPs from January to February 2023.

Finally, the Tubarão Terminal is also mention-worthy, with +17.48% more cargo in the period. The movement was 9.7 million tonnes.
