With rising productivity in Rondônia’s grain economy, the Port of Porto Velho is experiencing significant growth in export activities. From January to June 2023, the port oversaw 1,030,197 tonnes of soybeans in shipment operations. Comparatively speaking, in the corresponding period in 2024, this volume increased by 16.21%, totaling 1,197,211 tonnes, equivalent to 650 loaded barges. These results are considered satisfactory, given adverse weather conditions affecting various regions during different growing phases.

The latest grain harvest survey released by the National Supply Company (Conab), which dealt with data regarding the 2023/24 season, predicted that Brazil will harvest 147.3 million tonnes of soybeans this year. In Rondônia, the 2022/2023 harvest saw a substantial increase of 62.33%, reaching 181,812 tons.

Investments in Infrastructure

Governor Marcos Rocha of Rondônia highlighted that the state invested in port infrastructure last year to expand operating capacity and adapt to the new agricultural production realities in Rondônia and neighboring Mato Grosso. The port also imports fertilizers that are key to regional agribusiness, benefiting both producers and the port complex.

In total, the number of shipments reached 1,319,451 in the first half of the year, with notable increases in soybean byproducts, such as oil (57.84%), and refrigerated or semi-trailer cargo, including beef, pork, fish, and poultry (7.68%).

Commitment to Efficiency and Expansion

Fernando Parente, CEO of Porto Velho Port Society (Soph), the company in charge of the port, emphasized the port’s commitment to efficiency and expanding operations. “With this increase, we have reinforced our position as an important hub for agricultural exports. Investments in infrastructure and logistics have been crucial to this growth, not only in grain exports but also in fertilizer imports and cargo diversification, benefiting the entire production chain and boosting the regional economy,” Parente said.
