With just 30 days until Christmas, the price of some of the most traditional holiday dinner items has skyrocketed, driven by the surge in Brazilian exports to all corners of the world. In the first half of this month alone, wholesale prices for chicken in São Paulo rose by 9.4%, reaching R$ 7.60 per kilogram. Naturally, this increase in chicken prices is pushing up the prices of turkey and “chester,” favorites in Brazilian Christmas and New Year’s dinners. So, get ready to spend more and compare prices across different supermarkets. The data is from Scot Consultoria.
According to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea/USP), frozen chicken prices reached R$ 7.90 per kilogram at the end of the fortnight, while fresh chicken prices hit R$ 8.04 per kilogram.
The Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services reported that the average daily export of chicken until the third week of this month was 26,700 tons. This represents a 50.1% increase compared to the daily average exported in the first 20 days of November last year, which was 17,800 tonnes.
Meanwhile, pork exports reached 59,400 tons by the third week of this month, according to Secex. The daily average exported until the third week of this month was 5,900 tonnes, a 30.5% increase compared to the daily average of 4,500 tonnes exported in November last year.

Beef at Christmas Dinner in Southern Brazil
Less significant in the Christmas dinners of São Paulo residents and Brazilians from Paraná and further north, beef is also in high demand abroad. Secex data indicates that the daily average export of beef by the third week of this month was 13,700 tonnes. This represents an annual increase of 30.4% compared to the daily average exported in November last year, which was 9,300 tonnes.
