Brazil’s Rio Grande port sees 10% throughput drop in Jan-Feb 2023

The total cargo throughput at the largest port in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state reached 5,645,673 tonnes in January and February 2023. The performance of the Rio Grande port complex represents a drop of 10.01% compared to the first two months of 2022, with 6,273,760 tonnes on record.
According to information from port authority Portos RS, break bulk cargo take the lead at the port, corresponding to 3,281,356 tonnes in the period.
General bulk came in second with 1,740,900 tonnes, while liquid bulk came in third with 623,417 tonnes on record. Phosphate, crude oil, rice, and pulp were among the products the Rio Grande port handled that showed good results. In the same period, the number of full containers handled in Rio Grande reached 52,419 units and 39,382 empty boxes.

Poland, China, Cameroon, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Portugal, South Korea, and Spain were the top export destinations. Meanwhile, Argentina, Morocco, China, Peru, Canada, the United States, Russia, and Belgium sent the highest import volumes to the port of Rio Grande.
The neighboring port of Pelotas also experienced a cargo reduction in the first two months of this year (-6.40%). In January and February, 195,042 tonnes of cargo were moved by the port structure in Pelotas, against 208,385 in the same period of 2022.
Every week, an average of 15 vessels pass through the port of Pelotas, whose main cargo is wood logs bound for the CMPC factory in Guaíba, and clinker, which is cement in its raw manufacturing phase. In total, 184,942 tonnes of wood logs and another 10,100 tonnes of clinker were handled.
In turn, the port of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul saw an increase in its movement. The port of Porto Alegre saw a rise of 8.17% in cargo throughput. Approximately 96,652 tonnes of cargo were handled in the first two months of 2022, while in January and February 2023, the performance was 104,552 tonnes.
