Brazil’s TCP register 619% container throughput growth over past 25 years

On April 13, 2023, the Paranagua Container Terminal (TCP) celebrated 25 years of existence, and with every passing year, new productivity records are broken. In 2022, TCP reached the mark of 1.16 million TEUs handled. The record value is 619% higher than the amount moved in 1998, the year the company was founded.

Over the years, several investments were made to maintain constant growth. The most recent example is an investment valued at R$370 million, which will expand the vehicle entry and exit gates, create an energy substation, and grow the reefer cargo area, adding 43% energy outlets, from 3,572 to 5,126 outlets.

“Today, TCP is the world’s busiest export route for frozen chicken meat. Continuous expansion is necessary to meet agribusiness demand and maintain our status as the largest reefer terminal in Brazil,” says Giovanni Guidolim, manager of commercial, logistics, and customer service.

Investments and constant growth are present in the organization’s trajectory. When it started in 1998, the yard had 42,500 m². Today, the space is more than ten times larger, 487,000 m² in area.

TCP also invested in increasing the pier area and the port’s depth, which allowed the arrival of the largest vessel in the port’s history: the container ship APL Yangshan (owner CMA CGM), with 347 meters in length and 45 meters in width. Another record was productivity: in 2022, TCP reached 202 movements per hour (MPH) on the same vessel.

With the goal of increasing productivity, several investments are on the lineup to be delivered in 2023. Among those are the purchase of 11 new RTG cranes and the conclusion of works on the reception gate and the power substation.
