Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP) is planning on investing BRL 2 billion in its facilities at the Port of Santos over the next few years, with the goal of increasing operational capacity by 40%. It will implement a 5G private network in April to improve operational speed and efficiency. The announcement was made during the Intermodal South America 2023 trade show in Sao Paulo.

As informed by BTP, these investments are associated with the renewal of the leasing contract for the terminal. The request for early renewal was submitted to the then-Ministry of Infrastructure in May 2021, which extended the concession period from 2027 to 2047. This year, Ministry was split into two: Transportation and Ports and Airports. The renewal process should come to an end in the coming months.

“We are still discussing with the Federal Government the renewal of our contract. This renewal will bring new investments in equipment, 5G technology, and many other projects associated with ESG (environmental, social, and governance). We are looking forward to signing it as soon as possible so that we may put these investments into practice, creating around 600 jobs in the Santos region,” commented BTP’s CEO, Ricardo Arten.

As soon as BTP secures the renovation of the contract, its goal will be to expand the current infrastructure, enlarging operational capacity by 40% and quay capacity by 50%, by purchasing four electric equipment, totaling 12, in addition to new fenders.

Increasing the current container storage capacity by 40% is also in the company’s plans, which will be done by optimizing intra-terminal spaces, including the reefer area, automation of gates, and renovation of buildings.

“The Port of Santos urges for more capacity, and we are prepared to bring more investments to the sector. The company’s ESG guidelines will guide our investment strategy for 20 years. By 2030, we hope to become a terminal with zero carbon emissions,” said BTP’s CEO.

5G technology

BTP will count on its own private 5G network still in the first half of this year. The project, created in collaboration with TIM and Nokia, envisions the implementation of the network in the frequency predicted by Anatel for the city of Santos.

“As of April, we will be the first port terminal to have 5G technology, developed in partnership with Nokia and TIM, to make our operations more agile and efficient,” said Arten.
