BTP Terminal in Santos Completes Initial Phase of Multi-Billion Reais Upgrade

Brazil Terminal Portuário (BTP) in Santos finished modernizing 45 maritime fenders earlier this month. The company noted that this marks the completion of a first project structured within a package of investments agreed upon with the Federal Government in exchange for an additional 20-year concession at the port. Over the coming years, BTP will invest approximately BRL 2 billion to increase the terminal’s capacity by 40%.
According to BTP’s Operations Director, Ricardo Trotti, this is the first of several upgrades aimed at boosting the terminal’s competitiveness. “We’ve made significant progress in fixing the stepping stones to expand our operating capacity. In addition to the fender modernization, we’ll also be acquiring four new, state-of-the-art ship-to-shore cranes, with two set to arrive this year,” Trotti said.
With the installation of the new fenders, BTP is now equipped to handle ships from the New Panamax class at all its berths. These vessels, often referred to as “mega ships,” measure 366 meters in length and can carry between 13,000 and 15,000 TEUs. BTP’s terminal features 1,108 meters of quay and three berths with a depth of up to 15 meters.
Maritime fenders are critical safety components in port operations. They absorb the impact of ships during docking and undocking, helping to protect both the vessels and the terminal’s infrastructure.
