Bumper harvest ups throughput at Brazil’s Sao Francisco do Sul Port by 34%

The record grain harvest in the country is having a positive impact on the Port of São Francisco do Sul, making this August the best month in the history of the port complex.

In the past 31 days, cargo throughput at Santa Catarina’s largest port reached 1.8 million tonnes, a 34% increase compared to July, when 1.4 million tons were recorded.

Exports, driven by corn (578,000 tonnes) and soybeans (531,000 tonnes), reached 1.1 million tonnes.

Conversely, imports reached 727,000 tonnes, led by steel products such as coils, bars, and steel sheets (400,000 tonnes) and fertilizers (326,000 tonnes).

“The good numbers from the harvest and the port’s preparation to accommodate the increased supply represent the ideal equation to improve performance, which has the potential to surpass the numbers of 2022,” says Beto Martins, Secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways.

“We’ve been able to quickly and safely ship the extraordinary grain harvest from Santa Catarina and neighboring states,” says Cleverton Vieira, President of the Port. “This demonstrates that our port is ready to meet all expected and unexpected demands that contribute to the growth of the country’s and Santa Catarina’s economy.”

Year-on-year increase of 25%

Year-to-date, the loading and unloading of products reached 10.8 million tonnes, an increase of 25% compared to the first eight months of 2022 (8.6 million tonnes).

Exports were the highlight, totaling 6.5 million tonnes, including 4.4 million tonnes of soybeans and 1.67 million tonnes of corn, as well as soybean oil (200,000 liters) and wood (150,000 tonnes).

Imports, on the other hand, reached 4.3 million tonnes. Steel was the main product received from abroad (2.2 million tonnes), along with fertilizers (1.7 million tonnes).

Record Harvest

The 2022/2023 harvest in Brazil is the largest in history. According to a report released on Wednesday, August 6, by the National Supply Company (Conab), the national grain production is estimated at 322 million tonnes. This volume represents an 18% growth compared to the previous season.

Soybean production in the country is estimated at 154 million tonnes, a 23% increase. The corn harvest is also expected to be the largest ever recorded in the historical series, with production reaching 131 million tonnes, a 17% increase compared to the previous cycle.
