Bunker One to Test Biodiesel on Vessels in Brazil in 2022
Dec, 21, 2021 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202148
Bunker One, a Danish multinational corporation that supplies maritime fuels, intends to start, in January, testing biodiesel in part of its fleet in Brazil. The idea is to add a concentration of 7% of biofuel (B7) to the diesel oil currently employed by the company in two tugboats in Rio de Janeiro.
The company signed a partnership with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) to study the feasibility of the mixture. The tests will have a duration of eight months and will demand initial investments of R$ 250 thousand to R$ 300 thousand from the commercialization of maritime licenses.
The president of Bunker One in Brazil, Flavio Ribeiro, says that the experience is part of the navigation industry’s race for employing less polluting fuels around the globe. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is working towards a carbon emission reduction target of at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.
Bunker One wants to position itself as the leading supplier of the biodiesel-based blend in the marine fuel market. Ribeiro says that the goal behind the tests is to, at this time, contribute to the international acceptance of the biofuel and to consolidate Brazil as an exporter of the product in the future.
Ribeiro also explains that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognizes that biodiesel can be mixed with marine diesel, at 7% concentration, without causing any quality or specification loss. The large-scale use of biofuel still relies on a few adjustments to the standard that limit nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions as set by the IMO. The expectation is that the issue will be discussed in 2022 by the organization.
