BYD prepares second ship to boost electric car exports

BYD is gearing up to launch another large vessel to expand its global exports, transporting thousands of electric and plug-in hybrid cars as part of its aggressive worldwide expansion.
In its bid to surpass Tesla and solidify its position as the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD is determined to avoid reliance on third-party shipping companies, which could expose it to competition from other Chinese brands.
To this end, the company plans to establish its own fleet to reach markets in Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. This BYD “treasure fleet” is not just about securing cargo space.
With a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, BYD’s second vessel, BYD Hefei, differs from typical “ro-ro” ships (roll-on/roll-off). It’s powered by LPG, a strategic choice given that many markets factor in “well-to-wheel” emissions when calculating taxes on their vehicles.
The BYD Hefei will sail to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope, bypassing the dangerous waters near Yemen, where Chinese ships have previously been attacked by Houthi forces.
Built at the Guangzhou shipyard, the BYD Hefei measures 199.9 meters in length, with a beam (width) of 38 meters and a draft (hull depth below the waterline) of 9 meters.
With vessels like the BYD Hefei, the Chinese automaker is set to continue breaking its own records, as it did in August when it sold 373,082 electrified vehicles globally, 145,627 of which were fully electric.
Outside of China, BYD’s largest markets include Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico, and Brazil, though not necessarily in that order. BYD is among the top-selling brands in Brazil, Mexico, and Southeast Asia.
In Brazil, the company used the Explorer Nº1 to build up a significant stockpile of cars to prepare for the anticipated hike in import taxes.
