Cargill opens pectin factory in Brazil, first outside Europe

The Brazilian unit of the North American commodities company, Cargill, has completed the construction of a new factory to produce pectin, a fruit by-product used in jams, beverages, dairy products, and confectionery, the company announced on September 3rd.

The factory is Cargill’s only pectin facility outside Europe, where it has three such units.

The new plant will make Cargill the world’s second-largest producer of the food ingredient stated Laerte Moraes, Director of Starches and Sweeteners at the company in South America.

Located near the Brazilian citrus belt – where Cargill will have orange peel as a raw material –, the factory should help reduce the company’s production costs; currently, two of its factories in Europe need to import orange peel.

According to the company, the Brazilian unit will mainly serve export markets, especially Asian customers, and will employ 120 people.

Global demand for pectin, a natural ingredient that can be used in cooking and baking as an emulsifying agent, stabilizer, and thickener, is expected to grow by up to 4% a year, Cargill said.

The new facility has the capacity to produce around 6,000 tons of pectin per year. A kilo of the product can cost from 15 dollars to 20 dollars, according to Moraes.
