Brazil’s National Transport Infrastructure Department, DNIT, issued a bulletin yesterday that warned of intermittent disruptions of traffic along BR-163 in Pará, especially in the Serra da Anita area, due to heavy rain. Cargo transporters, faced delays of up to 40 minutes. Authorities halted the same stretch of road on Sunday which resulted in delays of 24 hours.
Brazil’s key northern route for shipping grains, the BR-163, is currently experiencing its period of greatest stress. The DNIT is producing regular bulletin updates to show the condition of the highway over the season from December 2 until May. The Federal Government has recently invested R$1.37bn in paving 620km of a 710km stretch from the border of Mato Grosso to Miritituba Port.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the concession for the BR-163 Highway will be called by the end of this year. The concession should last ten years.
