Cargo handling at Antonina up 180% in the first two months of 2019

According to the Port Administration of Paranaguá and Antonina (APPA), Paraná’s state’s ports handled 7.2m tons of cargo in the first two months of 2019. Port of Antonina cargo handling was up by 180% in the same period year-on-year. Ponta do Félix Terminal imported 174,384 tons of fertilizer in the first two months of 2019, compared to 62,221 tons during the same period last year. Expectations for continued growth are high, especially as next month the port authority plans to conduct dredging to increase the current draft of 7.5m to 9.3m.
Of the total 7.2m tons handled in the ports of Paraná during January and February, nearly 4.7m tons was solid bulk. Exports of soybeans via Paranaguá was up 24% to 1.6m tons. Other highlights for Paranaguá included increases in the import of wheat, up 91% to 126,305 tons, salt, up 52% to 63,393 tons, and barley, up 27% to 124,604 tons. Container throughput at the Port of Paranaguá also registered an 11% increase to 127,796 TEU in the first two months of 2019, year year-on-year.
