The PortosRio Port Authority, which manages the Ports of Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, Itaguaí and Angra dos Reis, handled a total of 61.5 million tons in 2022. Last year’s performance was practically stable compared to 2021.
According to statistical data consolidated by the company, cargo handling between January and December 2022 was 0.9% lower than the volume handled in the same period of 2021, as was impacted by the drop in iron ore handling in the 1st quarter of the year, however, presented a good recovery of 4.7% from the 2nd quarter onwards.
The result of the Port of Rio de Janeiro in 2022 was positive, surpassing the volume handled in 2021 by 7.7%. The growth was influenced by the increase in containerized cargo handling: 549,553 TEUs were handled, which represents an increase of 15. 4%, when comparing the numbers recorded for 2022 by 2021.
Cargo handling at the Port of Itaguaí dropped by 2.5% in 2022, due to the stability in iron ore handling, the main cargo handled in the port, and the decline in containerized cargo handling (40.5%) and coal (32.0%). The highlight was the growth in the handling of Steel Products (113.1%) and coke fuel (17.6%), which partially offset the drop in the performance registered at the port.
