Cargo movement in Brazil’s FNS railway grows 7% in 1H22

Known as one of the most important paths for the flow of Brazilian agribusiness produce towards the ports on the country’s northern shores, the northernmost section of the North-South Railway (FNS), managed by the company VLI, saw an increase in the volume of cargo transported in the first half of 2022. The company handled 6.6 million tonnes, a growth of 7% compared to the same period in 2021.
VLI’s operations at FNS generated a net income of R$ 278 million, compared to R$ 186.1 million recorded in the first half of last year – an increase of 49%. The numbers exclude the company’s activities on the Carajás Railroad, which VLI uses to access the Maranhão port system.
Soybeans, corn, and paper pulp are among the main products transported. The cargoes are collected in the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, Bahia, and Mato Grosso and shipped to ports in the northern coast, such as the São Luís Port Terminal in Maranhão. In addition, fuels, soybean meal, and biodiesel complete the mix of products that pass through the FNS headed to the international market.
In the last year alone, VLI invested more than R$ 900 million in FNS, helping maintain the railway network and rolling stock to guarantee efficiency for cargo transport for customers in the region.
