Cargo volume up 18% YTD for Pecém Port

The Port of Pecém in Fortaleza experienced a surge in operations during the first seven months of 2024. According to information recently unveiled by the Port Complex, 10.6 million tonnes of cargo were handled from January to July this year, marking a 17.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023, up from 9.4 million tonnes.

Container Operations See Notable Growth

A key highlight during this period was the increase in containers handled, which rose by 16.6%, reaching 280,425 TEUs, encompassing inbound and outbound operations and transfers.

The 2024/2025 fruit export season kicked off last week with the departure of the MSC Celeste from the Port of Pecém, loaded with 2,500 tonnes of melons, watermelons, mangoes, and grapes produced in Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, and Bahia.

Approximately 98% of these fruits are destined for the ports of Rotterdam and London, with the remaining shipments heading to other European ports. Additionally, another 1,000 tonnes are en route to the United States aboard the vessel Monte Verde.

Cabotage operations have increased 12% in 2024 compared to 2023, with a total volume of 6.88 million tonnes handled.

Minerals, cereals, mineral fuels, and plastics were the most offloaded commodities at the port, whereas salt, pig iron, plastics, and cereals were the top shipments.

The total volume recorded for long-haul shipping reached 3.7 million tonnes, a 15% rise from the previous year.
