Cargo throughput at the Vports Port Complex, Espirito Santo state, surged by 33% in the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. From January to May, the port handled a record-breaking 3.3 million tons of products, including containers, solid bulk, and general cargo.
The products with the highest increase in throughput were automobiles, coffee, granite, mineral concentrate, coal, hard coal, and petroleum coke.
Container-wise, tonnage grew by 51%, and the number of units increased by 60%. The port handled 95,000 units, equating to 1.38 million tonnes, with granite and coffee leading the charge.
General cargo throughput saw a 73% increase, totaling 471,000 tonnes. The port set a new record for car throughput, with 75,372 units arriving through Espírito Santo ports in the first five months, a staggering 215% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Solid bulk reached 1.084 million tonnes, marking a 23% rise, driven by pig iron, fertilizers, and mineral concentrates. Liquid bulk also saw significant activity, with 266,000 tonnes of fuel and a 14% increase in caustic soda, totaling 74,000 tonnes.
Gustavo Serrão, CEO of Vports, attributed the record volumes and growth to efforts focused on enhancing dynamism, efficiency, flexibility, and port infrastructure.
“Espírito Santo has a natural port vocation, but there was a clear need for modernization and infrastructure investment, along with more agile and personalized commercial relationships. This is what we’ve been focusing on,” he explained.
Since the start of the private management concession, Vports has signed eight new contracts, compared to the previous average of one new contract every four years.
