The port authority responsible for managing public ports in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ), has joined the Brazilian local network of the United Nation’s Global Compact aiming to encourage the business community to adopt and promote ten universally accepted principles in terms of human rights, labor conditions, environmental practices, and anti-corruption struggles. As the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) grow in relevance, Global Compact has taken up the mission of engaging the private sector into this new agenda.
Founded in the year 2000, UN’s Global Compact was idealized by former general-secretary Kofi Annan. The initiative will provide amplified access to tools to help CDRJ further its involvement with sustainability and other relevant topics. It also allows the company to join local and international programs, including network groups whose focus are Water Management, Food and Agriculture, Anti-Corruption Initiatives, Human and Labour Rights, Energy Consumption, and the SDGs. Counting more than 17 thousand members in almost 170 countries, Global Compact’s Brazilian network includes more than 1300 members locally, making it the third-largest Global Compact network in the world.
By joining the Global Compact, CDRJ commits to report annually its progress in relation to the ten principles. Companies that want to join the initiative can find more information at www.pactoglobal.org.br.
