Even in the midst of the economic and logistical challenges triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ceará export processing zone (EPZ) ended the month of April this year with an additional 27.6% in cargo handling. In all, 1,143,426 tons passed through the company’s gates throughout the month, increasing more than 247,000 t compared to the same period in 2020.
Among the main cargo handled in April, the largest flow came from iron ore, with 452,803 t handled, an increase of 38.7% compared to the same month last year. Another important input was mineral coal, which arrives at the company through the Port of Pecém; 215,448 t were handled in the period, representing an increase of 26.9% compared to 2020.
These two important inputs are used by companies at the Ceará ZPE, mainly steel plates. A total of 322,362 t were handled throughout April, an increase of 25.5% compared to the same month of 2020. These plates are sent to several countries worldwide through the Port of Pecém, thus concluding the last stage of this great chain that is part of the Pecém Complex.

“This growth in April handling is another result of the perfect alignment of our operational procedures with the Customs Control System (SICA), which guarantees a very modern and efficient standard. This increases speed and safety for all cargo-handling operations”, comments Bruno Souza, operations supervisor at Ceará EPZ.
The Ceará EPZ has already handled 4,139,755 t of cargo in the accumulated result for the year, culminating in a monthly average of more than one million tons. Between January and April this year alone, 911,223 t of steel slabs produced at Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) passed through its gates.
