Ceará ended 2021 having exported more than US$ 178 million in fruit. The result places the state as the third main outlet for these products, only behind Pernambuco (US$ 244 million) and Bahia (US$ 191 million).
In terms of volume, Ceará sold 138.7 thousand tons to foreign markets. The outlook for 2022 is for continued growth, with an expected increase of 3 to 5 percent in new job vacancies in the sector.
The information was released by the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas).
In terms of national figures, the exported value increased by 20% compared to 2020, reaching US$ 1.06 billion. The figure refers to 1.2 million tons shipped to the international market, representing an 18% increase.
According to the association, the appreciation of the dollar and euro against the Brazilian currency was the primary driver of increased exports of Brazilian goods.
In addition, the incidence of rainfalls in the country in 2021 favored harvests, increasing productivity, especially of export-oriented crops.
The pandemic also contributed to the result as consumers began looking for ways to increase their immunity through healthier foods, impacting the sale of fruit in the domestic and foreign markets.

Growth expected to continue in 2022
Luiz Roberto Barcelos, institutional director of Abrafrutas, sees 2021 as a positive year in general, owing to increased shipments in both Brazil and Ceará. He remains optimistic that the figures will continue to rise in 2022.
“These figures are expected to rise in 2022, as the exchange rate is very favorable and encouraging of exports. Russia, the United States, and Asia are among the new markets that are beginning to buy more fruits. In addition, we have new techniques for increasing output “, he claims.
The prospect of a more humid season in Ceará this year raises hopes, as does the arrival of water from the So Francisco River via the Transposition, which will provide greater water security to the sector.
The expert in the area of foreign trade and CEO of FTRADE, Zakaria Benzaama, also projects growth for 2022 but warns that some factors must be monitored.
“It will be necessary to keep an eye on things, as there are conversations about increased sea freight levels, particularly in the instance of exporting containers. There is also uncertainty about whether there will be enough equipment available and whether freight will compensate sails, not to mention the pandemic”.
Other relevant issues
Barcelos also discussed variables that could affect fruit growing performance in 2022. Unlike in most industries, political uncertainty during an election year should not have a negative impact on performance.
Notwithstanding, the excessive reliance on road transportation is a source of concern. The alternative, cabotage (transporting cargo between ports within the same country), is still uncommon, making it difficult for products to arrive in neighboring countries such as Chile and Argentina.
