On March 22nd, port authority PortosRio issued a bidding notice to hire a specialized company to conduct dredging works in the Port of Rio de Janeiro’s waterway channel. The Port Authority aims to offer better navigability conditions in the port and enable the berthing of New Panamax class ships with 366 meters of LOA.
According to PortosRio’s interim director-president, Jean Paulo Castro e Silva, “This is PortosRio’s greatest work so far for two reasons: it involves values at an unprecedented level in the history of investments made by the Port Authority, with its own resources, and it is fundamental to maintaining the competitiveness of our container terminals in the Port of Rio de Janeiro. As a result, it is a symbol of the company’s commitment to increasing cash generation and converting it into investments that may expand and modernize our infrastructure, thereby contributing to local and national economic growth.”
The Superintendent of Port Management of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, Leandro Lima, commented that “this dredging operation is part of a series of projects planned by the port authority, which seeks to ensure better infrastructure conditions for port users and, consequently, reducing operation costs, as well as the costs face by the entire logistics chain. Furthermore, such work will allow the Port of Rio de Janeiro to receive ever-larger container vessels, thus attracting new commercial routes to the country.”
According to PortosRio’s superintendent of Engineering, Roberto Catalão, “given the scope of the project, the estimated volume to be dredged is approximately 2.3 million cubic meters“. Catalão also reported that the maximum global price set in the notice is R$ 161,367,864.97; the company with the highest grant value offered will win the tender.
In addition to the channel deepening, the bidding procedure also aims to develop basic and executive projects, like a signaling and beaconing project, and other essential and complementary services necessary for the delivery of the work. The bidding notice and its attached documents may be found on the PortosRio website through the link: https://www.portosrio.gov.br/pt-br/node/2543.
