Chile: dairy exports see drop of 10.2% in July

With a contraction of 7.9% in the first half of the year, Chilean dairy product exports continued to decline in the second half of 2023. According to data from the Dairy Foreign Trade Progress Report prepared by the Secretariat for Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa), dairy exports through July totaled $140.2 million, representing a 10.2% decrease and a reduction of $16.0 million compared to the same period in 2022.
In terms of volume, dairy exports closed the first seven months of the year with a 12.9% decrease to a total of 47,970 tonnes, down by 7,092 tonnes compared to 2022. Meanwhile, in July 2023, sector exports saw a decline of 22.9% compared to the previous year, reaching $18.4 million, with a 16.2% drop in volume to 7,001 tonnes. The average price of dairy exports in July closed at $2,642 per ton, marking an 8.04% decrease from 2022.
Top Markets
The United States held the first position with a 23.44% share of the total exports, totaling $32.8 million—an increase of 10.6% compared to 2022. The United Arab Emirates ranked second with a 16.6% share of total exports and a total value of $23.3 million, indicating a 20.2% increase (an additional $3.9 million) compared to 2022.
Mexico, accounting for 11.2%, remained in third place but experienced a 5.0% year-on-year decline, with total earnings of $15.8 million—$845,000 less than the previous year. Peru moved up to the fourth position, achieving an 8.1% share despite a 7.3% decrease compared to the previous year, amassing a total of $11.4 million, which is $1.8 million less than the previous year.
Colombia dropped to fifth place, contributing 7.7% of the total but decreasing by 61.9% compared to the previous year, with sales of $10.8 million—$17.7 million less than in 2022. These five destinations represent 67.2% of the total.
Performance by Products
Condensed milk led Chilean dairy exports in July, with a 3.4% increase compared to the same period in 2022, totaling $35.6 million. In terms of volume, shipments reached 15,400 tonnes, representing a 14.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Other dairy preparations came second, reaching a total value of $26.3 million, a 19.4% year-on-year increase. In volume, exports totaled 6,098 tonnes, marking a 2.9% decrease compared to the previous year.
Cheese ranked third in terms of exports, totaling $18.7 million, reflecting a 5.5% decrease compared to the same period the previous year. The volume amounted to 3,895 tonnes, decreasing by 7.4% compared to 2022. Baby food climbed to fourth place thanks to a 9.1% increase, reaching $13.9 million, although volume-wise, they saw a 9.9% decrease, totaling 2,866 tonnes.
Whole milk powder exports dropped by 57.5%, totaling $12.0 million, with volume decreasing by 54.7% to 3,084 tonnes.
