Chile opens market up for Brazilian papaya
Oct, 02, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202340
Brazil and Chile have completed the procedures related to opening the Chilean market to fresh papaya (“carica papaya”) for domestic consumption, following the review of certificates and on-site audits that informed the analysis and establishment of phytosanitary requirements.
Brazil ranks second among the world’s leading exporters of papaya. Last year, exports reached USD 49.71 million, representing 15.3% of the global trade in the product.
It is estimated that the Chilean market for papaya will increase in the coming years, along with Chile’s growing demand for other tropical fruits. In 2022, Chile imported approximately USD 326 million worth of fruits, with Brazil being its fourth-largest supplier.
The positive outcome is the result of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
