Chile wants to increase opportunities for cherry in China

Claudia Soler, executive director of the Chilean Fruit Cherry Committee, attended the “Economic and Commercial Cooperation Meeting between Luohu-Shenzhen and Chile” to identify new opportunities for Chilean fresh cherry exports. The event was held last Thursday in Santiago and was attended by a delegation from the Luohu district, Shenzhen. The delegation was led by Fan Defan, director of the Luohu District Committee, who was accompanied by Du Xiaojun, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Luohu; Gan Chunyong, Li Zhi, Chen Xiaojun, Ma Zulin, and Guo Yujing, representatives of different areas of development and trade of Shenzhen.

The meeting was also attended by Ma Keqiang, counselor of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy of China in Chile; Ignacio Recart, of ProChile; Kamelia Emilova, of the Chilean-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, CHICIT, and Claudia Soler, of the Chilean Fruit Cherry Committee. During the meeting, Soler highlighted the importance of this type of event to explore and analyze new export opportunities with the Luohu authorities. She also stressed the committee’s strategy of deepening and diversifying its presence in China, especially in Shenzhen, the main entry point for Chilean exports to China, accounting for 36% of them.

Shenzhen, which stands out for its rapid economic growth, has established itself as an important urban center in China and is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world along with cities such as Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Luohu, on the other hand, has been recognized for its favorable business environment. It’s experienced a 200% increase in the number of companies in just five years, thanks to comprehensive support policies for establishing companies.

In 2023, Shenzhen had a GDP of $490 million, positioning itself as a crucial commercial hub with the world’s fourth-largest container port, China’s third-largest airport, and Asia’s largest port. This allows it to trade with 244 countries and regions, handling more than 30 million TEUs and 1.6 million tons of air cargo, with exports exceeding 2.46 trillion RMB.

There are 21 million people in this area and the population’s average age is 33. Almost 50% of the population are young people between 4 and 35 years old, representing a significant potential market for Chilean fresh cherry exports.
