Chilean Maritime Cargo Imports Sees 6.9% Decline in Q1 2024

During the initial quarter of 2024, Chile’s ports and terminals experienced a decline in maritime import cargo throughput, handling 11,599,965 tons. This marks a notable decrease of 6.9% compared to the same period in 2023, as per data sourced from the National Customs Service and analyzed by PortalPortuario.
In the span of January to March 2024, a total of 27,763,389 tons of maritime cargo related to foreign trade were processed, with approximately 41.8% attributed to imports destined for the Chilean market.
The bulk of the cargo volume originated from the Americas, contributing 7,812,039 tons to Chile’s shores. Following closely was Asia with 2,847,727 tons, trailed by Europe with 597,404 tons, Oceania with 258,488 tons, and Africa with 79,406 tons.
Leading the pack of cargo-supplying nations were the United States, shipping 2,807,328 tons, followed by China with 1,600,811 tons, Brazil with 1,517,155 tons, Colombia with 837,167 tons, and South Korea with 540,267 tons.
In terms of tonnage, San Antonio emerged as the primary gateway for maritime cargo, handling a staggering 2,830,324 tons, much of it originating from China.
Quintero secured the second position with 1,823,245 tons, primarily sourced from the United States. Meanwhile, Mejillones clinched the third spot with 1,592,530 tons.
