China authorizes Paraná-based meatpacking plant to export poultry meat

China has authorized another Brazilian meatpacking plant to send poultry meat shipments to its market. The meatpacker Somave Agroindustrial is based in the city of Cidade Gaúcha, Paraná, according to the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC).
The authorization, valid from August 7, comes amid a suspension of Brazilian poultry meat exports to China due to health protocol compliance following a Newcastle disease outbreak in Rio Grande do Sul. Although Chinese authorities have indicated that they will resume purchases, the official export approval is still pending.
“A new Brazilian poultry company (registration number SIF 993) will export poultry products that meet Chinese requirements produced on or after August 7, 2024, to China,” stated the Chinese government.
Olavo Lucena, managing partner of Somave, expressed that this qualification makes the company stand out. Somave has been seeking authorization to sell to China since April last year. Its monthly production is close to 5.5 thousand tonnes.
“That’s a big deal considering that China buys goods that aren’t so popular in Brazil, like chicken feet, a bulky product. We are talking about an important authorization. They pay above the national market, ” commented Lucena. The Ministry of Agriculture informed the company of the authorization today.
In addition to its Cidade Gaúcha plant, Somave operates another facility in Soledade (Rio Grande do Sul). This year, the company also gained approval to export to Singapore, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Chile.
Other authorizations
Earlier in March, China authorized 38 Brazilian establishments, including meatpacking plants and commercial warehouses, to export animal protein goods. Out of this pool, 24 companies produced beef, eight exported poultry meat, and one shipped heat-treated beef.
In total, 56 Brazilian plants are now authorized to export fresh poultry meat to China. The same announcement also included authorizations for companies from countries such as Ukraine, New Zealand, Australia, Belarus, Canada, Mongolia, and South Africa.
