China expects President Jair Bolsonaro to visit Beijing in late October to enable 34 new Brazilian refrigerators to export meat to its market. The information was established by Valor.
Along with Hong Kong, China absorbs over 40% of foreign sales of Brazilian meat, being the main importer of the country.
Currently, 64 Brazilian establishments are able to sell meat to the Chinese market, having invoiced US$2.5bn in 2018. According to industry sources, with the expansion of the number of units, the business growth potential reaches US$1bn a year.
In 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture had requested China to enable 78 new refrigerators. China sent a health mission to Brazil, which audited 11 plants, with negative results. Brazilian demand fell to 34 units, of which were considered to be the most likely to be certified by Beijing, among beef, pork, chicken, and one donkey refrigerators.
It is worth remembering that the context is in favor of Brazil, since China needs meat because the African swine fever epidemic has reduced the country’s number of pigs by one third. In addition, Beijing has barred pork from Canada and is facing a trade war with the United States, major meat suppliers to the Chinese.
