China continues blocking meat from Brazil

Ranchers, industries, and the Ministry of Agriculture still await China’s response on the resumption of Brazilian beef shipments for that market. The voluntary suspension of exports, adopted in compliance with the bilateral sanitary protocol as a result of the investigation of atypical cases of “Mad Cow” in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, has lasted 20 days already and is causing disruptions in the production chain.
Because it is a “repetition” of the measures adopted in 2019, when another atypical episode of the disease was identified in the country, Brazil expected to return to the market faster this time. At that time, shipments resumed after just 13 days.
See below the main destinations of Brazilian bovine beef in the last 12 months. The data is from Dataliner:

Without news from Beijing, the government and productive sector can only wait. All technical information has already been delivered – even translated into Mandarin – last week. China had an extended holiday earlier this week, but the expectation was that some reaction would be announced on Wednesday.
The Brazilian government is working carefully to avoid communication problems with the Chinese, as these could disrupt or slow down the reopening. The World Health Organization (OIE) favors the resumption and even stated at the beginning of the month that cases of “Mad Cow” in Brazil do not represent health risks for the national herd.
