China cuts soybean imports by 18% in March

China imported 6.35 million tonnes of soybeans in March this year, according to preliminary data published on Wednesday (April 13) by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). This figure represents a drop of 18.2% compared to the same month last year.
In terms of values, last month’s soybean imports totalled US$ 3.981 billion. In the first quarter, soybean imports totalled 20.28 million tonnes, a reduction of 4.15% compared to the same period in 2021.
Also according to the GACC, China imported 307,000 tonnes of edible vegetable oils in March, 60.5% less than in the same month last year. In terms of values, purchases totalled US$ 477.9 million. In the first three months of the year, China purchased 1.04 million tonnes, 62.8% less than a year earlier.
Chinese imports of meat and offal totalled 594,000 tonnes in March, a reduction of 41.7% compared to the same period last year when China imported 1.02 million tonnes. In terms of value, imports last month totalled US$ 2.37 billion. Between January and March, 1.66 million tonnes were purchased, down 36.5% year-on-year.
As for fertilizers, China imported 805,000 tonnes of the product in March this year, down 36.6% from the same month last year, GACC said. These imports totalled US$ 374.3 million. In the first quarter, imports totalled 2.43 million tons, down 17% compared to the same period last year.
