China lifted a more-than-two-year embargo on two Brazilian slaughterhouses focused on producing poultry meat, which first began due to Covid-10. The Minister of Agriculture, Marcos Montes, confirmed the information to the news service Valor.
Last week, the country’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) sent a note to the Ministry of Agriculture in Brasilia informing the end of the embargo for the meatpacking units Cooperativa Central Aurora Alimentos, in Xaxim, Santa Catarina, and Minuano Alimentos, in Lajeado, Rio Grande do Sul.
“This week, China cleared two units that had been closed off for exports due to Covid-19,” celebrated Marcos Montes. According to the minister, the Asian country maintains strict rules to prevent the virus from spreading. “The Covid problem is serious there.”
Past record
These plants had their export authorization suspended at the height of the pandemic when China blocked exports from several meatpacking plants in several countries and demanded a stricter sanitary protocol to avoid contamination of the cargo shipped to its territory.
Exports from the Minuano unit were suspended on June 26, 2020. As for Aurora, the embargo came into force soon after, on August 20, 2020. Since then, other Brazilian meatpackers have been embargoed, but shipments have already been normalized.
Seven units are still suspended at the moment. Since December 2021, the longest-running embargo has been at BRF’s poultry slaughterhouse in Marau (RS). Six units were banned from exporting in 2022, including four poultry slaughterhouses and two beef ones.
Some of these more recent suspensions were also motivated by the Chinese struggle against Covid-19.
