China permits unloading of Brazilian beef certified before September 4

In a positive sign in the negotiations for the reopening of China’s market to Brazilian beef, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) authorized the unloading of cargoes on November 23 that were certified before September 4th – when the suspension caused by the confirmation of two atypical cases of “mad cow” disease in Brazil, in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, became effective.
Ever since the Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil voluntarily suspended shipments to China following the bilateral protocol for the occurrence of cases of the disease, slaughterhouses feared for the loads of beef that were certified before the embargo.

By authorizing the clearance of these cargos, China sent a “sign of goodwill”, said an executive from one of the largest Brazilian meatpackers. It is not yet known when Beijing will release the embargo, but the release of already certified products is already a great relief.
According to calculations by an industry source, the volume of certified beef — on its way to China or already stopped at ports — is significant. It is estimated that it amounts to 140,000 tons of beef. Considering an average price of US$ 6,300 per ton, it is valued at almost US$ 900 million.
