China ranks 1st among sugar export destinations through the Port of Santos

In the first 11 months of 2023, the Port of Santos has been a key hub for sugar exports, with prominent destinations including China (3.1 million tons), India (1.7 million tons), Nigeria (1.5 million tons), Morocco (1.4 million tons), and Saudi Arabia (1.4 million tons).
Recognizing the growing significance of sugar in its operations, the Santos Port Authority (APS) has recently concluded a dredging contract to deepen the berths of its sugar piers. Following over a decade since the canal’s expansion to 15 meters, this strategic move aims to secure Santos as the primary gateway for Brazilian sugar on the global stage.
The bidding process results are currently in the final stages of approval and are expected to be disclosed shortly.
National figures
On a national scale, the Southeast Region, Brazil’s primary sugar cane producer, anticipates a 12.2% increase in harvested volume compared to the previous season, reaching 434.98 million tons. The recent 3rd Crop Survey for 2023/2024 by the National Supply Company (Conab) reveals a slight reduction in area but a boost in average productivity—from 75,629 kilograms per hectare to 85,046 kg per hectare.
In São Paulo, the leading sugar-producing state, the harvest commenced with favorable conditions due to heavy and consistent rainfall. However, a shift to dry weather in the latter half of the year expedited the harvesting process.
Aside from the favorable domestic scenario, major sugar producers like India and Pakistan are expected to witness reduced shipments, a trend advantageous to Brazilian producers. From April to October of the current year, sugar exports reached 18.8 million tons, marking a 9.7% surge compared to the same period in the previous cycle—a statistic reported by the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services (MDIC).
