China authorized 47 companies from Brazil in the peanut sector to export the product to the Asian giant.
A meeting with representatives of Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture with the General Administration of Customs of China confirmed that the South American country completed all steps to start exporting peanuts.
The export authorization is valid from now on.
The 47 companies were authorized by the Department of Plant Inspection and the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense of Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture.
China, the world’s largest consumer of peanuts, imports more than US$ 800 million each year.
From January to May 2022, there were 248,150,853 kilos of the product.
According to the government, Brazil has all the conditions to obtain a good market share by expanding sales to China.
“This shows that Brazil’s second crop, which consists of peanuts, sesame, and sorghum, is beginning to have space in our exports,” says Marcos Montes, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Mapa), commenting that the opening of the new market will provide increased product exports, job creation, and income generation in Brazil.
In addition to peanuts, negotiations for sesame and sorghum exports are expected to be completed this year. Talks were also completed for the export of soy meal and protein, as well as citrus pulp, which can start to be exported within a few weeks.
The ministry is also trying to secure the sale of grapes to the Chinese market and poultry and swine meals.
Peanuts in Brazil
According to data from the Brazilian Association of the Chocolate, Peanut, and Candy Industry (Abicab), in 2021, Brazil exported the equivalent of US$ 330.5 million of the product (256.6 thousand tonnes).
Brazilian exports are primarily destined for countries in the European Union.
The Brazilian authorities conduct recurring audits to ensure that the peanuts produced, whether for export or the home market, are safe and fit for consumption.
