China’s pork production sees best 2nd-quarter in at least 7 years

According to official data published on Thursday, China’s second-quarter pork production hit the highest level for the period in at least seven years after producers opened thousands of new pig farms last year to rebuild a herd decimated by African swine fever.
Pork production between April and June totaled 13.46 million tons, up 40% compared to the same period last year and well above the 10 million tons that are usually produced during this period, according to Reuters calculations based on official data.
China’s national bureau of statistics said that in the first half of this year, China’s pork production jumped 35.9% from the same period last year to 27.15 million tons.
China usually registers its lowest levels of pork production in the second quarter, as consumption decreases after the Spring Festival –which takes place in the first quarter– and the warmer weather reduces the appetite for meat.
This year, however, the figures were boosted by the largest local producers having invested billions of yuan in new farms throughout 2020 in an attempt to capture market share after the African swine fever epidemic.
Sales data from 16 exchange-listed pork producers showed they produced 42.8 million slaughter animals in the first half, a jump of more than 100 percent year-on-year, according to a report published by Boya Consulting on Wednesday.
